At Polar, we understand recreation centre maintenance and operating costs have soared over the last two years. On top of this, many major pieces of equipment are reaching end of life. To help with these costs, Polar has partnered with many recreation centres around Canada to obtain over $20,000,000 in government grants in 2022 to replace aging equipment and install energy recovery systems to reduce operating costs and carbon emissions. This presentation will cover the trips and tricks on how to obtain this grant funding.

"Not all water is created equal. Throughout North America water quality varies in terms of the level of dissolved solids, some areas such as New York City have extremely pure water with minimal dissolved solids and other areas (often in the Midwest) have water heavily loaded with solids.
Utilizing high quality water to make your arena ice is only one part of the puzzles. Other key factors cannot be ignored. Ice temperatures, Ice thickness, Ice build, relative humidity, tight building envelope, proper regular ice maintenance are all key components to making a high-quality sheet of ice."
About Dave:
Dave, with over 40 years experience in the business, will humbly say he just makes the ice look good. His long-time clients will say it’s much more than that. When there’s a question or a challenge, they know its Dave Loverock who will figure it out.
‘Every building is different and has its own peculiarities’ Dave points out, and his experienced eye zones in on how he can help.
As an instructor for major industry associations, Dave is often called upon to troubleshoot for facilities. He’s at home anywhere on the ice, whether for the Olympics, NHL Facilities or just your local rink. Dave is always there to talk to. He takes hundreds of calls per year from different facilities to talk about their ice and field questions.

Understanding your team, their strengths, their weaknesses, what barriers exist and how to remove them to continue to progress through a constant state of change. In this session I will talk about process, policy, equipment, and structure. How to mesh the resources with the people.

Controlling the natatorium humidity level is crucial to successfully maintaining aquatic facilities and ensuring that building occupants have a comfortable indoor environment. In recent years, Alberta has experienced increasingly humid summers that complicate the control strategies used by existing recreation centres.
This session will review the basic theory of moisture transfer within natatoriums, as well as outlining proven strategies that could be implemented to control pool humidity and maintain acceptable temperatures and occupant comfort levels. Our focus will be on strategies and options for retrofitting HVAC and control systems in existing facilities.

A random meme inspired this presentation. “Build a team so strong that anyone that sees doesn’t know who the boss is”. One of the toughest challenges for managers and supervisors is to find the right balance between commanding the troops and appearing accessible. Workplaces are changing, and traditional structure a thing of the past. I’d never say you don’t need a boss, but perhaps how we supervise has changed. In this session we discuss the difference between title and status and the power each can possess. We will talk tips and techniques to improve our leadership skills to create a positive workplace culture using the right blend of boss and buddy.

Almost everyday we are asked to provide our expertise to Cities, Towns, Communities and homeowners to assist with the construction & / or conversion of Tennis Courts to Pickleball / Multi-use Courts. While every project is unique, there are common specifications and procedures that should be implemented for Court rejuvenation / reconfiguration projects. Although we have been doing pickleball courts since 1978, our customers have requested our assistance with these types of projects, hence our suggestion for doing this seminar for the RFP.

Roof maintenance is an often-overlooked aspect of general asset management. While roof maintenance is often thought of as the act of preventing leaks, it serves a much greater purpose - extending the life of your roof and delaying the large capital expenditure related to roof replacement.
Roof maintenance and drainage issues can be approached in many ways; however, the process of identification and implementation is what is most important. Without a clear plan, including specific timelines, a roof can quickly deteriorate to the point where replacement, or large-scale restoration is the only option.
This presentation will outline step-by-step recommendations of developing and implementing a roof maintenance plan, and options available to address maintenance and drainage challenges.
About Tyler
With the ever-increasing use of mobile devices, wearable technology, member management (CRM) systems, and the information collected about our physical, digital, and online activities, the volume of data about all of us is growing exponentially.
But what does this have to do with recreation? How can your data be put to work to elevate your impact in the recreation and leisure space? How can Alberta recreation facilities apply business intelligence to reach their strategic goals?
This presentation will assist session participants in understanding where they (and their organizations) are with their data journey, provide a roadmap for improving data literacy, offer practical tips and resources to help them manage data, and show practical examples of data leveraged business intelligence insights developed through data analytics and artificial intelligence (machine learning).

Musicians in a symphony are all playing the same song, but each instrument has different sheet music. The notes being played by the flute section are much different in pitch and duration than the notes played by the trombones, but they all contribute to the experience of the audience. This is not unlike how our organizations function. How do you help your team work together to create harmony for your guests? Join us as we explore music as a metaphor for teamwork and leadership. No instruments required.
