Are you looking for a rewarding opportunity to make a difference in the Crowsnest Pass? We are recruiting for a qualified and experienced Community Services Operator III to join our team.

Position Summary
The Community Services Operator III operates and maintains various Community Service facilities, including arenas, sports fields, parks, green spaces, and related amenities to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for the public and renters. Due to the nature of the work, the duties will vary depending on the time of year and the facility. The incumbent also provides expert advice, leadership, and functions as a trainer on facility maintenance and operation. This position will fill in, as assigned, for the Community Services Lead Hand.

Education and Experience
This position requires the following minimum qualifications:
• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Must possess a valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license.
• Must possess the following certifications through Alberta Recreation Facility Personnel (AARFP): Arena Operator Level 2, Building Maintenance Level 1, Parks and Sports Fields Operator Level 2, and Custodial Care.
• Three years of experience in Parks and Recreation including ice facilities operations with an ammonia refrigeration plant and computer management plant.
• Canadian Playground Safety Institute Inspection certification.
• AARFP’s Supervisory Skills for Facility Operators course or one-year supervisory experience.
• Ice resurfacing certification such as AARFP’s Arena Maintenance Olympia or equivalent training.
• Fall Protection, Ground Disturbance, First Aid/CPR, WHMIS, and Propane Handling.

The following would be considered an asset:
• Class 3 license with air brake endorsement

Key Duties and Responsibilities
• Liaises with the Lead Hand regarding matters such as prioritization of work and projects, purchasing, equipment, policies, procedures, and safety. Fills in for Lead Hand as assigned.
• Monitors scheduled recreation facility events, bookings, and activities and arranges for required equipment.
• Communicates and interacts with public and other staff; ensures users are adhering to arena and facility rules & regulations.
• Provides a high level of customer service through positive communications and interactions with public and other staff.
• Installs and removes ice and ice markings in the arenas.
• Maintains ice surface throughout the season by flooding, shaving, patching holes, depth tests, and edging.
• Cleans and maintains facilities by sweeping floors, washing windows, emptying garbage, and walkway snow removal.
• Maintains safe facilities and equipment; includes checking furnaces and refrigeration plant, including assisting with draining oil from heat exchanger, painting, replacing arena glass, and testing back-up power.
• Maintains all outdoor recreational facilities.
• Installs, maintains, and repairs irrigation systems; sets zone times and replaces sprinkler heads.
• Oversees the operations and maintenance of the Municipal playgrounds. This includes regular inspections, reporting issues and concerns to the manager about costs related to maintenance and repair, and Liaising with third party contractors to assess viability and cost assessment for budget purposes.
• Installs, maintains, and repairs parks, playground areas, and equipment.
• Picks up litter and garbage around arena, parking lot, and in all facilities.
• Maintains community parks and cemeteries by aerating, power raking, mowing, fertilizing, irrigating, trimming, edging, planting and pruning trees, and general maintenance.
• Performs routine vehicle and equipment maintenance such as checking fluids, greasing, cleaning, and changing air filters, belts, blades, and oil.
• Leads work crews; directs and coordinates daily work plans as assigned by Lead Hand or Manager.
• In conjunction with the Lead Hand, provides guidance, in-house training, instruction, and support to temporary staff, and Operator I and II. Coordinates and monitors duties performed such as mowing, weed trimming, daily equipment maintenance, and safe operation of equipment. 
• Maintains and updates records such as daily incident reports, mowing checklists, procedure manuals, and other checklists as determined. Performs tailgate safety meetings with staff.
• Performs related duties in setting up for special events.
• Ensures safety and compliance with Municipal codes of conduct, facility rules, policy, and Alberta legislation.
• Inspects, monitors, maintains, and remedies hazards in sports fields, playgrounds, facilities, and other related amenities.
• Provides minor maintenance to recreation facilities as required.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills
• Knowledge of ice making and maintenance practices and procedures.
• Knowledge of turf and playground maintenance practices and procedures.
• Demonstrated knowledge of safe operation of mowers and other lawn care equipment.
• Knowledge of the safe work practices involved in maintaining ice plant and building systems.
• Ability to verbally communicate effectively.
• Ability to provide strong customer service to the public and renters, while encouraging a safe and fun environment. • Ability to learn new skills based on training from a variety of sources.
• Ability to learn to operate assigned equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
• Intermediate computer skills including the ability to utilize plant management software effectively, as well as MS Office Suite and Rec Desk.
• Ability to fill in for Lead Hand.

Schedules are based on collective agreement language and involve weekends and/or evenings during arena season.
